Holmes Mill Winter Wedding

Sophie & Sam

What a wonderful winter wedding at Holmes Mill this was! Sophie and Sam, along with their dog Rua, we’re a joy to photograph. I especially loved how these guys decided to go big or go home when it came to the confetti! You can never have too much! So many warm, wintery tones to this wedding which I think compliments my photography style perfectly. Plus, Sophie walked down the aisle to ‘Concerning Hobbits’ which was the sweetest.

How did you two meet?:
We are truly an NHS romance; we fell in love after witnessing how professional and committed we both are. LOL! We met on a dating app like everyone. Sophie ignored Sam’s drunken messages twice, then Sam had one last go by apologising for being a creep for messaging 3 times but he finally got a response because he told her he would beat her in a 5K race even if she had a 5 minute head start… Sophie is rather competitive. Here we are 3 years later… married!

Describe the proposal!: Well… we were meant to get engaged 10 months before we did… but lockdown stopped us going to Canada. Sam had long decided that he would only propose to Soph in Canada because he knew how much she had dreamed of seeing The Rockys. So, it was a pretty closely kept secret for quite a while. Then, when we got there Sam found exactly where he thought was the perfect setting to ask Soph to be his wife; Rainbow Mountain in Whistler National Park, a 10 mile round trek with beautiful views promised at the peak. 3 miles later we were hip deep in snow and it was avalanche season! Abort! We rushed back down the mountain, had an argument and Sam went back to the proposal drawing board.

For the next 10 days we were staying with friends so it wasn’t exactly the perfect romantic/natural landscape setting that Sam had waited so long for. So he decided to wait further until we got to Banff national park where we were going to spend 5 days alone before heading home. In the meantime, Sam was waking up at 4am every night to check the ring was still folded up in his walking sock, in his suitcase. Anyway, we finally got to Banff and this time we were a bit more safety conscious so visited Banff Tourist Centre to be advised on the safest, avalanche-free walking routes. We were advised by a delightful, queens-english speaking chap to head to Johnsons Canyon to do the Ink Pots Trail. It was truly spectacular and worthy of the effort and the wait!

What is special about your venue?: Well… its a brewery!

Any details of note about your big day?: Luckily for us, our parents LOVE wine. Therefore, we had an abundance of empty wine bottles and decided to use them as decorations in an attempt to try and save some money.
We are both gingers, so love autumnal colours/the cold. Plus Sophie is absolutely terrified of wasps, so we had to have a winter wedding. Otherwise Sophie would be running away constantly if the ceremony was in summer.
No intentional theme, just colours that match our red heads.
